Entertainment in the United States

Ready to have some fun? Finding fun things to do in America for me mostly centers around the incredible nature and wilderness, but there are so many great forms of entertainment to explore.  When I am planning a trip and making an itinerary, I always first look at the cities I am going to and do google searches on “calendar of events.” For example, if I google search, “NYC and calendar of events,” I quickly find this article and calendar: https://www.nycgo.com/things-to-do/events-in-nyc . You need to navigate it and look at the various sections like, music concerts, theatre, cultural events and see what type of things are going on. For example, you may discover a free movie shown in Central Park at night, which might be a great way to experience Central Park while hanging out with local New Yorkers. Or you may discover a really cool street fair, live concert, or special event that a museum is hosting. Each major city and even small town will have some information about what’s going on.  I always look at the towns before I buy my airline ticket and check if there are any cultural events that are really attractive to me, then I will plan my trip accordingly.

A very American form of entertainment that I highly recommend are Musicals (plays that involve a lot of songs). NYC is the capital of them but you can find them in most major cities. They are not cheap but for sure you will really enjoy it.  One other very American form of entertainment are “Amusement Parks” that you do not have in Poland. In almost each region of America, you will find very good “Theme Parks” (another way you can call amusement parks). https://tinyurl.com/yda8gmvr . As cool as Disney World is in Florida, it is very complicated to go there, and you will need to read about how to visit and how to use the different passes. They have a whole system you must learn before going. Therefore, I would suggest going to any of the other amusement parks that are not so complicated to navigate unless Disney World is your main reason for visiting. Almost each state has a different amusement park to go to.  Traveling with kids in America is really easy and there are tons of things to do with them. Many restaurants, hotels and parks cater to them.

All the time, there are festivals being organized in towns. Halloween is a great time to see the US. The 4th of July or Independence day always comes with fireworks and barbecuing outdoors. Or you could go to one of the biggest parties like Mardi Gras in New Orleans, or Burning Man in Nevada. Additionally there are many music festivals organized around the US. https://tinyurl.com/yd8j2xlx .

When you go to each town you can look at the trip advisor for a list of best things to do in town, always take a look. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions . My favorite website ever to look up the strange and unusual is http://www.atlasobscura.com . You can find strange and interesting places wherever you go all over the world. Take a look for Poland for example. Also Americans can make some really strange and funny monuments. If you are on a road trip you should download “Roadside America,” http://www.roadsideamerica.com . You can visit some unique Americana, like the worlds largest ball of twine/string!!! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/8543 When you go on a long road trip you can look at those sites or their apps for phones and see what is close to you. Sometimes, you can find some great places to stop and stretch your legs and see something unusual.

Each First Friday in most cities there is a, “First Friday Art Event,” where the art district opens up their galleries until late and there are food trucks and entertainers performing there. It is usually a lot of fun. If you find yourself in a city on the first Friday of a month, google “First Friday,” and the city you are in for event information. For example I googled, “Denver and First Friday Art, ” and I found https://tinyurl.com/yb5mfwrf . There are many art districts each hosting events, some are more for families, and others are more for young people having a good time, and it’s a great way to spend any first Friday of any month. Many Cities organize the Art walks in the various art districts on different nights so they do not compete. Like in Seattle: http://seattleartwalks.org .

Also if you are into the music scene, you should always look up on the internet a search of what’s playing in the area. You can always check ticketmaster which sells tickets to concerts all over the USA. You can get a good idea of what shows are going on where you are. http://www.ticketmaster.com . Another good site to search for tickets is: https://seatgeek.com .

For nature, I would suggest reading about the National Parks before you go. https://www.nps.gov/index.htm . Each State also has their own system of state parks that can equally be as beautiful. So you can also google whichever state you go to and their state parks. If you do plan on visiting a lot of parks you definitely should buy the “America the Beauty” pass which will allow you for a year to enter in a car with up to 4 people in it. It costs 80usd and you will save money in the long run. https://store.usgs.gov/pass . And as you already might know, I recommend camping in the US nature! It’s the best way to see it. Each of my blog posts about traveling will talk about the nature in that area.

If outdoor sports is your thing, the US has everything from biking, surfing, rafting, golfing, skiing, to hiking. Whatever your pleasure, America will have lots of it.  Also the national sports such as American football, basketball, baseball and Hokey can be seen in university towns and national sports leagues. If you are into sports, definitely check what sport season it is in America and look for tickets to any sporting event in that city. You can also you Seat Geek to find tickets for sporting event, https://seatgeek.com . I grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and the university basketball games there are a huge deal and a great way to experience the real America.

Also I will mention this here and in the blog about food and wine, that in many States now, especially out West, Marijuana is legal.  You can smoke and buy marijuana for recreational (not just with a medical card) in: Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington State, and Washington, D.C. (Capital). In many other states you can smoke with a medicinal card, and police won’t arrest you. https://tinyurl.com/y82vp6f8 .

America is a bit more liberated than Poland, and I encourage travel for gay and Lesbian adventurers. San Francisco is considered the capital of gay culture, however, every big city has a gay neighborhood with bars and restaurants in it. In America, gays are allowed to marry and in many states adopt. There are still areas in America, however, where you really cannot show that you are gay, but in many places such as the major cities, collage towns, as well as the Western and New England States, it is tolerated and even celebrated. Most cities have gay clubs that have, “Drag Show Brunches,” served on the weekend mornings where you eat brunch and watch a show (so much fun) or at night you could see a “Drag Show Bingo,” where you can go and play bingo and win prizes. They are a great way to spend your evening, just google either for whichever city you go to. Heterosexuals (Straights) are always invited and have a lot of fun also as long as you are open-minded. Also you can take a look for a calendar of Pride events held throughout the United States: http://www.gaypridecalendar.com . Lastly, if you are gay you can also visit a gay resort towns like: Provincetown (Ptown), Massachusetts; Ogunquit, Maine; Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; Key West, Florida; Palm Springs, California; Guerneville, California. Lesbians should check out these cities: https://tinyurl.com/yajneuuy

When I went to school in Chicago, my girlfriend took me to a drag show, and we had a great time. I recommend them too! Plus I can’t dance, but my girl could with all the guys and I got so many free drinks 🙂
